Meet Christopher Yancy: The Story Behind the Stories

Meet Christopher Yancy, an author, self-advocate, speaker, and storyteller with Down syndrome. His children’s books are inspired by his real-life experiences—from learning everyday skills and caring for his rescue dog to overcoming challenges and exploring the world. Christopher dictates his stories in his own words, sharing his humor, determination, and unmistakable personality on every page.

Christopher is also a Special Olympics medalist, performer, employee, and world traveler. Through his books and speaking appearances, he encourages children of all abilities to believe in themselves, celebrate what makes them unique, and dream bigger. His message is simple: Your story matters, your voice deserves to be heard, and no dream is too big. You got this!

A Life That Became The Stories

Christopher Yancy is a children’s author, self-advocate, and speaker with Down syndrome—but Down syndrome is only one part of his story. His life has been shaped by kindness, determination, hard work, humor, and a willingness to try things others may not expect him to do.

As a student, Christopher received a school-wide Kindness Award in front of an audience of 1,500 people, with his story later receiving local and national attention. At his first Special Olympics swimming competition, he earned two gold medals and one silver medal. He has performed the National Anthem, sung at St. Patrick’s Cathedral with his high-school chorus, maintained a job in his community since age 18, and traveled throughout the United States and abroad.

Christopher has also faced significant challenges. After undergoing open-heart surgery, he was walking—and dancing—in the hospital hallway just 15 hours later. Six days after surgery, he stood before an audience and sang the National Anthem at a Special Olympics event. That same courage, resilience, and joy can be found throughout his books.

Christopher’s real experiences form the foundation of his children’s book series. He dictates his stories in his own words, transforming everyday accomplishments, extraordinary milestones, family adventures, and world travels into books children can understand and enjoy. His stories explore kindness, friendship, independence, self-advocacy, perseverance, and the confidence to try.

Why Schools Should Meet Christopher Yancy.

An author visit with Christopher gives students more than a reading. They meet a published author who can speak honestly about being underestimated, finding his voice, accomplishing difficult things, and turning his own life into stories.

Christopher gives children with disabilities the opportunity to see themselves represented as authors, workers, athletes, performers, and travelers. He also helps students of every ability understand that differences do not diminish a person’s dreams, talents, or value.

His message is simple: Every person has a story. Every voice matters. And no dream is too big.
